In stricter and legal terms, it means “not copyrighted”. If a public domain contains the source code, this is a special case of non-copylefted free software which could mean that some copies or modified versions may not be free at all.

An executable program can be in the public domain without the source code being available. Since free software requires accessibility of source code, this cannot be considered as such. Most free software however, are not in the public domain. There may be some legal steps to be taken to disclaim the copyright on any program that is desired to be written in the public domain.

PulseAudio is an Audio Server for linux. Respect to the others Linux Audio Server, PulseAudio will have many features. Fedora8 will be the first Linux Distro that comes with PulseAudio built-in and officially supported by the Fedora Developer Team. Seems that also Ubuntu will have PulseAudio as Deafault Audio Server.

18th October 2007: Ubuntu release its new Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10.
I’ve read many posts of Ubuntu users that talks about Ubuntu and the new release. I’m a Debian user and yesterday I’ve decided to switch to Ubuntu because I’ve see that Ubuntu packages are released from many software house. Ubuntu have the best support on the web, it’s community is the largest I’ve ever seen. Ubuntu is based on Debian and for these reasons I make my switch. I’ve download and installed Ubuntu 7.10 on my PC in 30 minutes.
When the system was up and running I’ve see a surprise coming from automatic ATI driver installation: System -> Administration -> Restricted Driver Manager.
My next step was to turning on Special Desktop Effects of Compiz: System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Extra Effects. But compiz don’t start! Error: “Composite Extension was disabled”.

Next I’ve switched option composite from 0 to 1 on “/etc/X11/xorg.conf”:

Compiz don’t start… why?? What happened??

I try to start compiz by Shell and I’ve see this error: “Checking for Xgl: not present.”
So, I’ve installed xserver-xgl with: “apt-get install xserver-xgl”.
Compiz Works!!

Only a bug whit GL Desktop to manage compiz configuration under Gnome. In fact, if you want install by “apt-get install gnome-compiz-manager” you will see “GL Desktop” on System -> Preferences. If you try to start it, GL Desktop don’t start, became a zombie process. While GL Desktop is a zombie process try to change Desktop Effects, and GL Desktop will run! I think this bug will be fixed soon!

I will do many others test on Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10, now I can says only that Ubuntu Gutsy have some problems.
