Proprietary Software

May 23, 2008

To better appreciate Linux which is a free software, users should also understand the one existing on the other side – that of proprietary software. Proprietary software’s use, redistribution or modification is prohibited as it requires asking permission from software owners. It contains restrictions that effectively prevent users to use it in a manner they would prefer.

It is different from commercial software which is developed by businesses to make money from its use. Commercial free software is possible as users can still get as much freedom in using the software including the freedom to charge a fee for distributing it to others.
